Good Day Sacramento’s Bethany Crouch filmed a segment of the show from the Molecular Prototyping and Bioinnovation Lab recently to report on a collaboration there between fashion designer Sacha Laurin, Design professor Christina Cogdell, and TEAM Assistant Director Marc Facciotti. Laurin creates a leather substitute from kombucha “mother”, the bacterial mat that produces the popular beverage. One of her designs is featured in the current issue of National Geographic Magazine. Cogdell and Facciotti are working with Laurin to genetically alter the kombucha so that it will produce color, creating naturally colorful “leather”. Watch the videos below:
